The Ellis County SPCA held our 6th Annual Bow Wow Howl-O-Ween Hustle on October 25, 2008 at Getzendaner Park and we would like to thank all of our participants and event sponsors who helped with this wonderful day of fun in the park.
The event consisted of a 1 mile fun run, contests, and entry in the Texas Country Reporter Parade. This was our first year to hold our event with the Texas Country Reporter Festival that was coordinated by the wonderful group at the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce. Each participant received an adorable goodie bag filled with treats for the dogs and their humans. The entire event was sponsored or donated so the money raised could be used to save homeless animals in our community.
The winner of our fun run was Ricky Hill and his adorable dog Rocky who seemed like he was ready to go a few more miles. After the fun run we held several contests that were judged by City Councilman Joe Jenkins, Attorney Bob Carroll, NOW Magazines Sandra McIntosh, Ellis County Commissioner Dennis Robinson, Ellis County Treasurer Judy Burden, Ellis County Clerk Melanie Price Reed and Jackie Wray.
We shortened the contests this year so we could have time to make the parade but judging was still tough and we even had to have our first run off that resulted in Cathy Wood and Baby Bingo winning the owner-pet combo costume contest. The best dog costume went to Audrey Chandler's dog Max who was dressed as a cowboy. The fastest Tail in Texas as won by Pam Patterson and her dog Harley. The final category was best trick or treat, which was won by Vickie Dumont and her border collie Pricilla that did rollovers and jumped through hoops.
We are so appreciative of the support we received with participation and sponsorships for this event. We raised just over $11,000 during the event and also participated in the Texas Country Reporter Festival during the day that raised even more to allow us to care for the abandoned dogs and cats in Ellis County. In case you didn't make it to the festival this year, our staff and volunteers also worked the New York Hot Dog stand, and the owner donated 100% of his profits in his "Get a Dawg - Save a Dawg" campaign. This single day helped us raise much needed funds to cover our costs that average $17,000 each month.
Of course this event would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors:
The Ellis County SPCA is a private, non-profit 501(c)3 animal welfare organization that does not receive funding from any other humane agency and is not a branch of the ASPCA. We rely on contracts, grants, fundraising and private donations to help pay our operating costs that total more than $200,000 each year.

Don't take a chance with your dog when you go out for a walk or take a trip to the park. Keep your canine on a leash; that way, no one gets lost or winds up in a dangerous situation.
